Concrete Removal & Replacement
Concrete Removal and Replacement in Denver, Colorado
Is your driveway cracked, sinking, or just old and worn out? You are not alone, and you do not have to live with it. A failing concrete driveway is one of the most common problems Denver homeowners call us about, especially right after buying an older home. Porterhouse Construction Co. removes old, broken concrete and replaces it with a clean, solid, properly poured slab built to handle Colorado’s freeze-thaw winters. This page walks you through exactly what concrete removal and replacement is, why concrete fails here, what we replace, the decorative driveway options you can choose from, and how our whole process works from the first phone call to the final sweep.
Who We Are
Porterhouse Construction Co. is a family-owned, owner-operated concrete and fence contractor based in Denver, Colorado, serving the Denver metro and the Front Range. When you hire us, you work directly with the people doing the work, not a salesperson and a crew you never meet again. We focus on doing the job right the first time, with honest estimates and clear communication from start to finish.
What Is Concrete Removal and Replacement?
Concrete removal and replacement means exactly what it sounds like. We tear out your old, damaged concrete, haul it away, and pour a brand new slab in its place. It is different from a repair. A repair tries to patch or cover damage that is already there, which usually fails again because the real problem underneath was never fixed. Replacement starts over from the ground up, so the new concrete sits on a properly prepared base and lasts for decades instead of months. If your concrete is badly cracked, sunken, or crumbling, replacement is almost always the smarter long-term choice.
Why Concrete Driveways Fail in Denver
Denver is hard on concrete, and a few things are usually to blame. The freeze-thaw cycle is the biggest. Water seeps into small cracks, freezes overnight, expands, and pries the concrete apart a little more every winter. Our expansive clay soils swell and shrink with moisture, which lifts and settles slabs unevenly over time. Age matters too. A driveway poured thirty or forty years ago, often without proper base prep or reinforcement, simply reaches the end of its life. Add heavy vehicle weight and strong Colorado sun, and an old driveway cracks, sinks, heaves, and fades. Once it starts, it only gets worse.
Signs You Need Replacement, Not Repair
You are ready for removal and replacement when you see deep or spreading cracks, sections that have sunk or lifted and no longer sit level, surfaces that are flaking, pitting, or faded, water that pools where it never used to, or pieces breaking away at the edges. If you are patching the same spots over and over, that is your sign. Replacing it once costs less over time than chasing repairs that keep failing.
Concrete Driveway Removal and Replacement
Driveways are the heart of what we do and the number one reason homeowners call us. A cracked, sinking, or faded driveway is the first thing people see when they pull up to your house, and it drags down the look and the value of the whole property. We remove the old driveway completely, prepare the ground the right way, and pour you a new concrete driveway that looks sharp and holds up for the long haul. This is especially common for people who just bought an older Denver home and inherited a driveway that is well past its prime. We tear it out, replace it, and while we are at it we can upgrade it with color, pattern, and finish so your new driveway looks far better than the plain gray slab that was there before.
Decorative Driveway Options
A replacement is your chance to make the driveway something you are proud of, not just functional. Your options include:
Stamped concrete driveways, where we press patterns into the fresh concrete so it looks like natural stone, brick, or pavers at a fraction of the cost.
Flagstone stamped driveways, one of the most popular looks, giving you the rich, irregular flagstone appearance in a single solid, low-maintenance slab.
Cobblestone pattern driveways, for a classic, old-world stone look.
Ashlar slate and other tile and stone patterns, for a clean, high-end finish.
Colored concrete, using integral color mixed through the concrete or surface stains and release colors, so we can match your home and landscaping instead of leaving it plain gray.
Decorative borders and banding, where we frame the driveway in a contrasting color or pattern for a custom, finished edge.
Classic flat finishes, including a smooth or broom finish and exposed aggregate, if you prefer a clean traditional look over a pattern.
Whatever direction you want to go, classy and subtle or bold and patterned, we will walk you through samples and help you pick a look that fits your home.
What Else We Remove and Replace
Driveways are the main event, but we replace all of it. That includes back and front patios, including sinking or cracked patios you want torn out and rebuilt, often as a fresh stamped patio. We also replace walkways and garden pathways, sidewalks, front steps, stoops, and porches, and concrete pads such as garage slabs, shed pads, hot tub pads, and equipment pads. If it is old, broken concrete anywhere on your property, we can tear it out and replace it.
Our Removal and Replacement Process, Step by Step
We keep the whole process clear so you always know what is happening.
First, we come out, look at your concrete, talk through what you want, and give you an honest, detailed estimate. Second, we protect the area and demo the old concrete, breaking it up and hauling every piece away so your property is left clear. Third, we excavate and grade the ground, then compact a solid base, because a driveway is only as good as what sits under it. Fourth, we set the forms that shape the new slab and add reinforcement, such as rebar or wire mesh, for strength. Fifth, we pour the new concrete and place it evenly. Sixth, if you chose a decorative finish, this is when we color, stamp, and texture it before it sets. Seventh, we cut control joints in the right spots so the slab cracks where we want it to, not randomly. Eighth, we let it cure properly and can seal it to protect the surface and the color. Finally, we clean up completely and leave you with a finished driveway you can be proud of.
Commercial Concrete Removal and Replacement
We also remove and replace concrete for commercial properties, HOAs, and property managers, including cracked parking areas, failing sidewalks, curb and ADA work, dumpster and equipment pads, and common-area flatwork. Same careful process, scaled to the site, with the insurance and scheduling commercial work requires.
Serving Denver and the Front Range
We remove and replace concrete throughout Denver, the metro area, and Front Range communities including Cherry Creek, Washington Park, Hilltop, Park Hill, Highlands Ranch, Arvada, Lakewood, Centennial, Littleton, and beyond.
Why Homeowners Choose Porterhouse
Every job is owner-operated, so the person who quotes your driveway is the person standing on it while it is poured. We prep every slab the right way, build for Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycle, and treat your property like it is our own. Honest estimates, clear communication, and concrete that lasts. That is the whole idea.
